Do not currently own this model. The memory is a bit vague because my previous ownership of a 40GX would be about 15 years back. When i first began the uhf hobby the Icom handset was my tentative venture into the uhf radio scene. The word tentative has relevance.Yes i used to be a 27Dregger. My first base/mobile rig was a Uniden grant XL 40 channel am.Lsb and Upper side band transceiver.

I think the 27megahertz community had a nickname for it as in "The black rose".

The IC-40GX had aesthetic appeal. It was ergonomic and did not feel too flimsy.By the same token it was a pleasant weight without being cumbersome. The channels could be selected by rotating the main dial. Also channels were entered by pushing channel up & down buttons on numbered keypad.

Another option for entering a channel was directly on the numbered keypad.Just press the appropriate numbers on keypad.Battery pack removal is easy.Manipulate a latch to slide battery pack on or off.Receive sensitivity and transmit modulation were acceptable.

There is a dealer function on the IC-40GX which enabled you to change three digits for selcall identification. To those who were not aware of this function only two numbers could be accessed by the customer/owner.5 Tone format is CCIR.From what i can ascertain no other parameters can be adjusted via this dealer mode.

Henceforth the IC-40GX "Dealer Mode" allows you to change three digits of the 5 tone selcall.Back in my day a select few of us would refer to this function as the "Finger crippler". Do you have a flexible hand? Yes! Stand by please.

Dealer programmed digits for selcall are enabled by pressing "Function" "Hash" "Clear A" buttons all at once and then power on with the volume dial. The 'Function' 'Hash' 'Clear A' keys must all be pressed in together and then you power on with volume dial.

Until you get used to it this is a fiddly procedure.Basically the hand needs to be a contortionist. To those who owned a IC-40GX whenever you will know exactly what i am referring to.This function button is located on left hand side of handset. The 'Hash' [#] and '[Clear A] keys will be clearly designated as such on your number keypad.

With the correct weather conditions prevailing i managed some long distance contacts.I think some of these unusual distances occured during tropospheric ducting. Some experiments were done on duplex channels.

When i entered uhf with this handset nearly every tom, dick and harry seemed to have a commercial rig.I was often mudded but this did not stress me.Anyway who cares as it is only a hobby.Eventually it became tedious not being able to get a word in.

This is what enticed me into purchasing the 99Channel IC-U210T. The U210T was my first Icom base/mobile commercial transceiver.Once upon a time in south.australia the average joe citizen was into PRM 8030, 8020 ,FM900, Tait, maybe a few Kennys, Motorola. The odd Sawtron/Kyodo here and there.

This U210T had a bit of popularity in adelaide but nothing devoted because of its pricing.I think there would only have been about 20% of us who owned them. The modulated audio on a U210T is quite distinct.Yes the radio community were quick to pounce. What model you on there bloke?

Have not heard that sort of modulation before.Cant nit pick it.Sounds good. Was'nt sure but i figured you were using a different model. It's obviously a different sort of transmit audio.

Sorry to go off topic.Anyway that is how things used to be in sleepy old backwater adelaide.I have been to melbourne and sydney in the past.Yes i enjoyed the experience. No offence to my fellow magpie citizens but sydney and melbourne are obviously more sophisticated.
