Hi guys, i have a gme 3400 with a uniden 6db s/steel antenna (either 600mm or 900mm, cant recall- car's being borrowed by a friend). I personally think that the reception i recieve is a bit on the poor side. How far on an average day should i get.

The terrain is flat, there is some bush around, but mostly farms, and I'm in the country

I tested it with a friend. He was about 10km away and i couldn't hear him but he could hear me.

Would upgrading to a larger antenna (f/glass, 1.5-2m (approx)) give much better reception?

gday mate depending on the terrain you would be lucky to tlk 25 ks line of site with a gme as for hearing him the non commercial radios tend to not have a real good recieve but i would get your mate to check his end if u cant hear him ...i only have 1 gme and thats the 3200 for basic 1-40 scan i run mostly commercial radios and on 5watts a commercial radio will recive much better as for the ariel the bigger sticks they are not necsseceraly the best alternative i would recommend an elivated feed with a steel whip on top for an honest 6.5db gain
Cheers Shaun

You could check the squelch setting is to high or that it's "quiet" mode.
