Wink Ic-40s

Do not currently own a IC-40S but have pleasant memories of my former handset.Good design.Solid build without being cumbersome. All the functions were user friendly to activate.Capable receive and acceptable transmit audio. The EX2118 clone application was logically structured.Re-editing data and sending it back to radio via computer is incredibly easy.

I would have parted ways with the 40S about 11 years ago.During that period i regarded the extra twenty channels as quite sufficient.Once upon a time in the good old days everyones main scan menu was police receive. So the extra channels for receive only in my handset were put to good use.Scanning the cops on my IC-40S was a total blast.

Did not matter who i was monitoring as most of the police receive could be heard loud and clear. The usual things.Car pursuits.Dog squad.Apollo air (Police helicopter) Licence checks.

The signal meter seemed to be logical and quite easy to read.At least they did not have the three bar concept on the IC-40S.There was no selcall.Lack of selcall feature did not bother me.Battery pack removal and re-securing was a total breeze.

There is a certain atmospheric condition referred to as tropospheric ducting.During a summer period many years ago i managed to access a long distance station via the tropospheric ducting. This situation was achieved with the IC-40S.I have a tendency to under estimate the potential of handsets.

When the backing cover is removed there are two tuning lugs.I have heard from people that the 40S is capable of receiving 70Cms.My radio tech performed an experiment but unfortunately the adj software or trimmer utility was the wrong version.Henceforth the revision was not compatible with my handset.

So the IC-40S is capable of extra receive? Yes i thought it was quite intriguing.Anyway it did not bother me as the ham crowd dont seem to use 70cms to a great extent.I listen periodically on the IC-F2010 commercial and IC-208H and any activity seems scarce.

To summarise the IC-40S was a nifty little handset in the period it was released onto the market.During the good old times these extra twenty channels were just the trick for police receive.A nice ,sensible logical signal meter. Also the bonus were those two tuning lugs .Can imagine that people who had the compatible version trimmer utility would have acquired some fascinating results.
